Studies found that it’s possible for human beings to be depressed with smiles and laughter. There are people who with depression do not show any signs of depression to people around them while they are suffering inside. There are people who feel depressed managed to mask or suppress their depression every single day for the sake of their high sense of responsivities. Because they do not prioritize their own wounds or pain. They prioritize others above their own.

It’s very common for everyone to experience a low mood. But people with depression loss pleasure and passion in activities they used to love. For people with smiling depression, they are able to carry pleasant conversations and they socialize with others without any problem. But, they put on a mask to the outside world in the group while sharing their troubles, worries and sufferings. They are the ones who digest their own pain without seeking any help.

According to the statistics, about one in ten people is depressed. For people who suffer from smiling depression, they are able to carry on their daily routines as before even though they feel hopeless and down. They may not even notice their mental problems and end up leaving their depression untreated.

Austrian neurologist Viktor Frankl asserts that we shouldn’t aim to be in a “tensionless state”, free of responsibility and challenges, but rather we should be striving for having a purpose in life. He believes that having a purpose in life is the cornerstone of good mental health.
